Prevalence of Genital Human Papilloma Virus Infection and Genotypes among Young Women in Sicily, South Italy

2008

Abstract Infection with oncogenic human papilloma virus (HPV) types is a necessary cause of cervical cancer. This study assessed the prevalence of HPV infection and genotypes among 1,006 randomly selected women, ages 18 to 24 years, living in Sicily (south Italy). The overall HPV rate was 24.1% (95% confidence interval, 21.5-26.9). The most frequent types were HPV-16 (4.5%), HPV-53 (2.7%), and HPV-84 (2.6%). The prevalence of vaccine types HPV-6, HPV-11, and HPV-18 was 1.4%, 0.1%, and 1.3%, respectively. Cytologic abnormalities were uncommon (3.1%) and associated with HPV detection (P < 0.0001). The only risk factor for HPV infection was the number of sexual partners (women with 2-3 …

Stepping up to strike: a union mobilization case study of Polish migrant workers in the Netherlands

2015

This article examines a union mobilization of Polish temporary agency workers in the Netherlands. The case study contributes to the migrant organizing literature a micro-level account of the dynamics of mobilization from the viewpoint of the migrants and organizers involved. The findings emphasize the importance of key actors in building solidarities within and between different groups of workers in fragmented workplaces, with implications for unions seeking new ways to respond to changing employment practices. This study highlights some of the possibilities and limitations of organizing among contractually fragmented workforces.

Trust and team identification at multicultural workplaces : perceptions of Finnish HR professionals

2017

Growing global mobility has rapidly diversified workplace demographics across the world. Finland that has traditionally been considered a relatively uniform nation in terms of cultural and ethnic diversity has also experienced a shift in its population in recent decades. Despite the growing multiculturalism, established diversity management practices are yet to be developed in many Finnish organizations, and the subject has not gained much academic attention either. Still, competent intercultural leaders are often vital for both successful business results and for the well-being of their multicultural teams. The aim of this thesis is to shed light on the current state of international human…

Betanin inhibits myeloperoxidase/nitrite-mediated peroxidation of human low-density lipoprotein

2004

BETANIN INHIBITS MYELOPEROXIDASE/NITRITE-MEDIATED PEROXIDATION OF HUMAN LOW-DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN M. Allegra, L. Tesoriere, D. Butera, A.M. Pintaudi, M.A. Livrea Dipartimento Farmacochimico Tossicologico e Biologico - Facoltà di Farmacia - Università di Palermo - Via C. Forlanini 1 - 90134 Palermo INTRODUCTION: Betanin, the betalain red pigment occurring in the Cariophillalae order plants, including cactus pear, has recently been reported to posses reducing properties and to behave as lipoperoxyl radical-scavenger in vitro (1). In addition, this phytochemical is bioavailable, accumulates in human LDL after ingestion of cactus pear fruits, and is able to protect LDL against copper-induced oxid…

Enterprising refugee women: Analyzing postfeminist governmentality in an organizational context

2023

This study examines a model project initiated by a German Federal Ministry in the middle of the vast increase in forced migration to Germany after 2015. The project aimed at facilitating the integration of female refugees into German society by way of ‘empowering’ them to become self-employed. A business counseling agency with a feminist orientation was commissioned to design and run the project. Interpellating refugee women as subjects of entrepreneurial self-actualization to enact gender equality, the project embodies a tangible example of postfeminist governmentality. Combining recent research on postfeminism with analytics of governmentality, the study directs its analytical gaze to the…

Explanations of success and failure in management learning : What can we learn from Nokia's rise and fall

2016

International audience; In this paper, we study the changing explanations of success and failure over the course of a firm's history. We build on a discursive approach that highlights the role of narrative attributions in making sense of corporate performance. Specifically, we analyze how the Nokia Corporation was framed first as a success and later as a failure and how these dimensions of performance were explained in various actors' narrative accounts. In both the success and failure accounts, our analysis revealed a striking black-and-white picture that resulted in the institutionalization of Nokia's metanarratives of success and failure. Our findings also reveal a number of discursive a…

Identifying the Neurocognitive bases of creativity to increase human and computational creativity

2022
